Hi, I am Ben, a builder, a plumber, a drummer, a teacher, a husband and a Dad...

School didn’t suit me and having left with not many qualifications I was lucky enough to secure an apprenticeship where someone gave me a chance. I loved it and wished this practical learning had been offered sooner as I thrived in this environment.

I started my career completing a four-year apprenticeship within mechanical engineering which I loved, and quickly moved into building services and construction. I have owned my own business and was self-employed for nearly 20 years within plumbing and heating before retraining in teaching and learning to pass on my knowledge within a college setting working with all ages and abilities.

I am passionate about teaching and learning from vocational and practical methods. I have been teaching and tutoring within further education colleges for nearly 10 years. I have worked extensively with SEN young people and researched and tried out many different teaching and learning styles to best suit the learners and to adapt my own style to become a caring and creative practitioner.

We often learn most by doing and I enjoy working with young people to bring out their confidence via practical skills to help develop their self esteem by making and doing whilst achieving small reachable goals which can help develop self-worth and general lifelong skills.

I am also a drummer in a band performing locally and nationally and am passionate about making noise and love music of all types, especially loud live music.

I am married and have two cats, one dog and three children (one of whom we adopted). This has encouraged me to seek out a more therapeutic parenting style which I have then carried over into my teaching methods, which is soft and nurturing with a blend of practical and theoretical skills to help facilitate the individual learner needs.

I am passionate about working with the young people at Esteem to build the new workshop and music studio together and all the new and exciting experiences and learning opportunities this will bring along the way.

I love Exmouth and what it has to offer on our doorstep such as the beach and the countryside and enjoy exploring new areas with our family dog, Ted.
